The Ford Transit has ruled the commercial van market in the UK for decades now, and with the introduction of the smaller Transit Custom in 2012, Ford now hold an even tighter grip on the industry. Its success has been built on its reputation for arguably being the most reliable heavy-duty vehicle out there, that will also last the test of times and drive extremely well. Furthermore, as Ford surge to keep the Transit up-to-date with the requirements of the modern van driver, it is now available is a countless number of heights, wheelbases, specs,... whatever you so require!
For the rest of this review, we're going to concentrate on the Transit Custom - Britain's most popular van.
Before going into the different specs and what not, it's probably worth mentioning that the Custom is available in two different build variants: the Van and the Double Cab Van. The Van is the standard vehicle with the choice of either two or three seats, whereas the Double Cab has an extra row of three seats behind the front row. Both of these come with either short or medium wheelbase, named L1 and L2 respectively. The Van is also available in high or low roof, named H1 and H2 respectively. Find below the luggage capacity of all these different variants & dimensions:
- Van L1 H1: 6.0m³
- Van L1 H2: 7.2m³
- Van L2 H1: 6.8m³
- Van L2 H2: 8.3m³
- Double Cab L1: 3.5m³
- Double Cab L2: 4.4m³
Moving onto the different models, the Custom is available in three different models, moving upwards in quality:
- Trend: The Trend comes with 15" or 16" steel wheels (depending on which series you choose), halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights, connected radio with 4.2" display & four front speakers, front & rear parking sensors, cruise control, Hill Start Assist, Load Adaptive Control, Emergency Brake Assist and Roll Stability Control.
- Limited: Upgrading to the Limited adds 16" alloy wheels, SYNC 3 Radio with 8" touchscreen display, heated driver seat, air conditioning in the front and several body colour alterations to the exterior.
- Sport: Finally, with the Sport, there's the addition of 17" alloy wheels, Sport styling kit, rear view camera and Lane-Keeping Alert.
