CUPRA, previously known as SEAT Sport, serves as the high-performance motorsport division of SEAT. Initially, CUPRA denoted the top-tier high-performance models within SEAT's lineup. The name was a fusion of ‘Cup’ and ‘Racing’, honoring their motorsport accomplishments, and the CUPRA emblem adorned both road and track vehicles. SEAT's participation in the FIA 2-liter World Rally Cup marked a pivotal moment for the CUPRA brand. The Ibiza Kit Car excelled on the rally circuit, securing three consecutive Manufacturers’ titles in 1996, 1997, and 1998. This transformed the Ibiza from an economical hatchback to a competitive hot hatch, with further triumphs in the British Rally Championships, enhancing the Ibiza CUPRA's reputation in the UK. In 2018, SEAT opted to elevate CUPRA into an independent performance marque, marking the conclusion of CUPRA models.
